Antivirus for Mac is a free version of the popular virus checking software that first made its name on. Note that this free version now replaces the paid version that was initially released for Mac. Although virus issues are not as serious a concern on Macs as they are on Windows, the ease of use and efficiency of the Windows version bodes well. Antivirus provides pretty much most of the functionality you get in the Windows version but of course with the added bonus that it has a slicker OS X style interface. However, be warned that as with many virus checkers, its not very clear how to uninstall it so make sure you have something like to get rid of it if you choose not to keep it. Antivrus for Mac is very easy to use and follow allowing you to scan in realtime or scan drives individually for problems and errors.
Scanning is fast and efficient and you shouldn't experience any hang-ups. However, you may notice that your Mac slows down a bit and is even unresponsive at times while Avast! It does tend to consume CPU at time and there may be added processes that Avast! For Mac runs that cause this. If you want to make sure potentially virus carrying mail attachments are scanned, then you must ensure this option is checked in system preferences.

By Anonymous Great Antivirus for people who are Anxious about there Macs being infected. Really nice program to use, very efficient and detects ple nty of new malware in the community, it also helped me get rid of Genieo, not installing genieo ever again, and never uninstall avast mac security, avast always keeps the program fully updated and secured.
I also like the web safety feature and how it warns you on the side of your computer screen if it detected something on a website or in your file system when your not scanning for viruses. And the settings is very nice indeed, which i do like about this program. Pros: That it detects viruses easily. No trial and it has many new features too. Cons: Custom Scan be buggy sometimes but it is nut a big fuss reviewed on June 24, 2015.
By Anonymous Avast vs Sophos. If Avast free, for MAC is anything like the pc version, it should be great. On my pc, I ran Windows 7, Avast used litt le system resources, and constantly updated itself. Its user interface is excellent, and is easily controllable.
The scans are fast, and how it handles an infected file, or suspicious file, is clear, straightforward. Sophos, on the other hand, I am throwing away. VERY slow on large scans, and NOT clear on what it does. I had found a world clock installed, and it said it was suspicious, but when I asked what it was, had nothing to say. Once deleted, (I think), it was not only NOT in the log, but i found no reference to it's cleaning. The scans take large system resources, and did not stop when I asked it to. I had to restart my machine.
It did this each time I started a scan. I am putting Avast on my MAC. I'll be back. Reviewed on April 11, 2012.
Articles about Avast Mac Security.
10.6 (Snow Leopard) is a fantastic version of the Mac operating system that many users are still quite happy with. And if you're happy with it, why upgrade, right? Well, frankly, I can think of a million reasons to upgrade — Yosemite on a newer Mac and iOS 8 on modern iOS devices is a powerful combination. But I recognize that not everyone is quite as anxious to uproot their Mac's operating system as I am. And it's sometimes a one-way trip. The I've written about before includes AdwareMedic, Intego Mac Internet Security X8, and ClamXav.
The first two apps require or higher, but ClamXav still works on Snow Leopard, according to its developer. I'll be perfectly honest: I like the best of any of these apps. I've had the best luck nuking the adware that's infested my family's and my customers' Macs.

But if you're really not comfortable upgrading to something newer than Snow Leopard, will work too. ClamXav is free and safe to use. It can detect Mac-specific malware and malware that affects Windows apps too, so you'll keep your PC-using friends safe. What's more you can set up ClamXav as either 'passive' or 'active:' You can configure only to scan the files you want to check, or activate 'Sentry' mode to monitor your hard drive every time new files arrive.
