I'm not trying to create an addictive game that people spend all day on. I am trying to create a service for people who are interested in finding a relationship, find a relationship.

When you matched with someone, you'd get each other's real full names (not aliases). You'd meet the friends of your friends (so community is baked in). The point is: Hinge, which first launched in 2013 and has more than $20 million in funding, promised to be different - a place where people treat each other with basic human kindness. The point is not the woman should have liked the guy. Hunt is horrified: "This person just served our military! He just got home!" The room breaks out into awkward laughter.

And her response - which she'd never say face-to-face - is this: "OK, so this is going to sound absolutely terrible - and feel free to judge me or tell me I'm a terrible person - but I don't date people who don't have grad degrees." She doesn't know, so he explains it means mid-level. Hunt reads an actual conversation that happened on Hinge:Ī man who just got out of the military matches with a woman, and takes the time to send this message: "I got out as staff sergeant, E-6, if you know what the military ranks are at all."įair start. Tinder - the far more famous and infamous competitor.īut it's not just Tinder. For example, 67 percent of women have received a sexually explicit photo or message on Hinge conducted market research and discovered some very telling norms. Hunt is part of the company's leadership team, giving a presentation in a recent all-staff meeting. "Walking up to a woman in street and asking her to show you one of their boobs. " started saying things - on dating apps, on Twitter, everywhere - that we would never say to someone in person," says Katie Hunt. Back in January, it was coming to grips with a crisis. Hinge, and it's based in Manhattan's Flatiron District. Today, after 10 months of soul-searching, the startup is making a very public commitment to change. But, as with so many things in love, it didn't go according to plan. Match won’t share its users’ data with Garbo, but users can run a background check so long as they get their date’s last name or phone number, which they likely would want to share anyway if they plan on moving forward with dating. There is a startup in the love industry that promised to help people find real relationships - not just sex. Garbo’s tool isn’t live yet, so we can’t test its accuracy, but this could upend how anonymous people feel on a dating app, particularly on Tinder, which has consistently deemphasized personal details like a last name and full bio on profiles. The team will begin testing and building out capabilities for Garbo on Tinder in the coming months, and once Garbo is integrated into Tinder, other Match Group US brands, which include OkCupid, Hinge, and Match, could follow.
It’s unclear whether this will be an a la carte feature or one tied to the brand’s subscription tiers.

The background checks on Tinder won’t be free, but Match is working with Garbo to figure out how to price them so they’re accessible to most users. Garbo also doesn’t disclose traffic violations. The company also says drug-related offenses don’t meaningfully predict “gender-based violence,” which is what the brand is primarily concerned with preventing. Notably, in a blog post published last month, Garbo said it won’t publicize drug possession charges in order to take an “active stance toward equity.” It cites research about the disproportionate percentage of Black people who are arrested for drug charges compared to white people.

Garbo says it collects “public records and reports of violence or abuse, including arrests, convictions, restraining orders, harassment, and other violent crimes,” and its website says it accepts manually submitted “police report(s), order(s) of protection / restraining orders, and other legal documents that report abuse, harassment, or other crimes.” (That manual function isn’t currently live, however.)
That could dramatically affect who finds success on the app and who doesn’t. This means Tinder users will be able to vet their dates with details like their arrest record or history of violence. The investment, of which Match didn’t disclose the amount, will help make the group’s tech available to Match’s users, starting with the company’s most popular app: Tinder. The company announced an investment in Garbo, a nonprofit that looks to allow people to run background checks with only their first name and phone number or full name. Tinder and other Match Group-owned apps are going to let their users run background checks on possible dates.
